Pettiford, who scored 22 of his 30 points after the break, showcased his ability to deliver under pressure. “I just focused on playing my game and helping my team,” he said after the game. “I knew we needed a spark, and I was determined to provide that.”
The matchup began with Michigan establishing an early lead, closing the first half at 39-33. However, Auburn adjusted their strategy quickly, with head coach Bruce Pearl emphasizing the need to tighten defense and push pace. “We were not playing our style in the first half. I told the guys we needed to be more aggressive,” Pearl commented.
As the game progressed, Pettiford’s intensity shifted the momentum. Alongside him, guard Allen Flanigan contributed 15 points, while forward Jabari Smith added 12 rebounds, solidifying Auburn’s efforts on both ends of the court. The Tigers’ defense tightened, forcing Michigan into costly turnovers that led to fast-break opportunities.
Pettiford’s standout performance wasn’t just about scoring. His defensive energy ignited the crowd, while Michigan struggled to find their rhythm in the second half. Auburn outscored their opponent 45-31 in the final 20 minutes of play, clinching their victory and advancing them to the Final Four.
Michigan’s head coach Juwan Howard acknowledged Auburn’s tenacity, stating, “They made the necessary adjustments, and Pettiford was on fire. We couldn’t match their intensity in the second half, and that ultimately cost us the game.”
Auburn will face the winner of the matchup between Houston and Purdue in the Final Four, set to take place at the Alamodome in San Antonio on April 5, 2025. As the excitement builds for March Madness, fans remain hopeful for a championship run.
