Philadelphia Flyers Sign Owen Tippett To $49.6 Million Extension

The Philadelphia Flyers have secured the future of their franchise by signing winger Owen Tippett to an impressive contract extension. The eight-year deal, worth $49.6 million, will keep Tippett in Philadelphia for years to come, ensuring his presence during the team’s rebuilding phase and beyond. General Manager Daniel Briere announced the signing, expressing confidence in Tippett’s potential and his ability to contribute on and off the scoresheet.

Tippett, who is currently 24 years old, has already shown promise in the NHL. With 18 goals and 30 points in 46 games this season, he has proven his scoring and playmaking abilities. His highlight-reel goal against the Dallas Stars last week, where he showcased his speed and skill, only added to his growing reputation.

Briere acknowledged the risks involved in such a significant investment but believes Tippett’s skills and potential make him a worthwhile long-term investment. He emphasized the rarity of power forwards like Tippett who possess both scoring ability and playmaking skills. The Flyers organization believes that Tippett’s best days are still ahead of him.

Tippett’s recent performance, including scoring six goals in six games before getting injured, likely helped boost his contract negotiations. His significant contributions on the ice are evident, backed by impressive statistics and high praise from coach John Tortorella. Understandably, the Flyers recognize that Tippett still has room for improvement defensively, but they remain optimistic about his continued growth.

The Flyers acquired Tippett from the Florida Panthers in a trade during the 2022 deadline, sending longtime captain Claude Giroux the other way. Since joining Philadelphia, Tippett has amassed 86 points in 144 games, already showcasing his impact on the team.

In addition to the Tippett signing, the Flyers have also agreed to terms with center Ryan Poehling. Poehling’s two-year contract, worth $3.8 million, provides both stability for the player and the opportunity for future growth within the team’s young core. At 25 years old, Poehling has found success as a depth forward and penalty killer under Tortorella’s coaching.

The Flyers’ commitment to securing their rising stars and building for the future is evident in these contract extensions. With Tippett and Poehling locked in, the Philadelphia Flyers are solidifying their foundation and aiming for success in the years to come.
