PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Zoo is celebrating the arrival of four critically endangered hatchlings, born to the oldest first-time mother Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoise, Mommy, who is nearly 100 years old.

The hatchlings debuted on April 23, coinciding with the 93rd anniversary of Mommy’s arrival at the zoo in 1932. They are crucial for the survival of a species that has dwindled to just a few thousand in the wild.

“These four babies are really important for the success of the species,” said Dani Hogan, Director of Mission Integration at the zoo. “We think these animals can live to be about 200 years old and contribute to their population for centuries.”

The hatchlings, which are each the size of a tennis ball, are being distinguished by their unique colors of nail polish applied by zookeepers. Visitors to the zoo will have the opportunity to vote on names for the hatchlings from several themed options, including Philadelphia landmarks and famous television characters.

“This is a significant milestone in the history of the Philadelphia Zoo,” said President and CEO Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman. “Our vision is that these hatchlings will be part of a thriving population of Galapagos tortoises on our healthy planet a century from now.”

The zoo has been carefully monitoring more tortoise eggs, with the hope of welcoming additional hatchlings in the coming weeks. “We could have more babies in the future. We’re not sure yet, but we’re hopeful,” Hogan added.

Galapagos tortoises, known for their size and long life spans, are a symbol of conservation efforts, as several populations have gone extinct. The Philadelphia Zoo is committed to protecting these animals and educating the public about wildlife conservation.

The hatchlings will remain at the zoo for at least five years before potentially moving to other facilities. Their names will be announced shortly after the voting period ends.
