Phillies Catcher Realmuto Injured by Foul Tip in Game Against Blue Jays

TORONTO — Philadelphia Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto left Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays in the bottom of the ninth inning after a foul tip from shortstop Bo Bichette struck him in the protective area. Manager Rob Thomson confirmed that Realmuto is being evaluated by doctors for the injury.
“It’s a pretty good one,” Thomson said. “He said he’s had worse, but we’ll see. We’ll check him out tomorrow.” Realmuto fell forward immediately after being struck and remained on the ground for several minutes. He was visible in discomfort, prompting concern from teammates.
Phillies pitcher Aaron Nola commented on the incident, noting, “That’s something you never want to see. I don’t really know how it feels but I can imagine it’s extremely painful.” Despite the injury, Realmuto did not leave the stadium for medical treatment and was later seen in the clubhouse.
Realmuto, a three-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, had been batting .225 with five home runs and 22 RBIs heading into the game. He went 1-for-3 before exiting the game. After Realmuto’s departure, he was replaced on the field, as the Phillies continued to play out the game against the Blue Jays.
Following the incident, Nola added, “J.T. is a tough guy. Seeing him go down like that, obviously it had to hurt pretty good. Just hope he’s all right.” The team will provide updates on Realmuto’s condition as they receive further evaluations.
