PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — Major League Baseball is gearing up for an exciting March as teams approach critical extension talks for key players. The Philadelphia Phillies are engaged in discussions with left fielder Kyle Schwarber regarding a contract extension amid preparations for the regular season.

With the two-game Tokyo Series slated for March 18-19 and traditional Opening Day set for March 27, teams are looking to finalize player roster strategies. Schwarber, who is currently in the last year of his four-year, $79 million contract, expressed his intent to remain with the Phillies long-term.

At 32 years old, Schwarber has made a significant impact in Philadelphia, accumulating 131 home runs and a .344 on-base percentage over the past three seasons. As he is set to become a free agent at the end of this season, the talks of a potential extension could see him earning around $20 million over the next two to three years.

Alongside Schwarber, the Phillies are also considering other prominent players, including catcher J.T. Realmuto, who has similarly expressed openness toward an extension, highlighting a strategy to retain top talent as they move forward into the season.

Meanwhile, the New York Yankees are reportedly in contact with free agent slugger J.D. Martinez, who is currently dealing with personal matters. The 37-year-old had a mixed performance last season, batting .235 with 16 home runs, which raised concerns about his readiness for the upcoming season.

Despite a strong first half, where he posted an .806 OPS, Martinez’s second half dropped significantly to .623 OPS, leading to a reduction in his lineup appearances. As the Yankees explore options to strengthen their roster, Martinez’s ability to fill a designated hitter role emphasizes their search for immediate replacements.

As these contract negotiations unfold, teams are keenly aware that time is of the essence with the season approaching rapidly. The success of the Phillies and Yankees this year could hinge on how these extension talks develop and the players’ performances on the field.
