Phoenix Suns’ Breakout Star: Rookie Ryan Dunn Shows Promise in Preseason
The Phoenix Suns‘ rookie, Ryan Dunn, has become a focal point of discussion as the NBA preseason unfolds. Initially perceived as a long-term project with strengths primarily on the defensive end, Dunn’s early performances suggest he may have been a valuable steal in the 2024 NBA Draft. The Suns selected Dunn with the 28th overall pick after trading down, with many analysts focusing on his perceived offensive shortcomings.
Phoenix Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer appears optimistic about Dunn’s development, crediting the rookie’s hard work and the strategic coaching staff, including Vince Legarza, Chaisson Allen, and Schuyler Rimmer, all of whom have player development experience. Dunn’s offseason efforts, particularly his work with skills trainer Phil Beckner, who also trains notable player Damian Lillard, seem to be paying off as his shooting has become more reliable and effective.
Dunn has reportedly shot 44% from the three-point line during preseason games, a notable improvement from his 23.5% shooting at Virginia. “I put in a lot of work on my shot, so it was good to see the confidence in myself taking them and seeing them go in,” Dunn told reporters, expressing confidence in his newfound offensive capability.
Co-captains Devin Booker and Bradley Beal have lauded Dunn for quickly adapting to the NBA’s demands. “He’s going to guard the best opposing player, probably 10 out of 10 times,” Beal mentioned in training sessions, highlighting Dunn’s defensive prowess. Additionally, Booker noted, “I usually look at form and mechanics, and everything looks there,” referring to Dunn’s shooting technique.
Despite these developments, the Suns are aware that translating preseason success into the regular season will be the real test of Dunn’s abilities. Yet, their investment appears to be bearing fruit, as Dunn exhibits an improved shot and effective defensive tactics, reminiscent of established defensive stars in the league.
As the upcoming season approaches, the Phoenix Suns’ decision to gamble on Dunn could significantly impact their performance, potentially elevating them from a mid-tier team in the Western Conference to a serious contender. With Dunn’s evident growth, the team is optimistic about their rookie’s potential contribution to their success, while acknowledging the preseason is merely a starting point for the challenges ahead.
