Phoenix Suns Struggle After Nick Richards Acquisition Amid Roster Overhaul

PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Phoenix Suns have faced mounting challenges this season, culminating in the acquisition of center Nick Richards on Jan. 15. As the team reevaluates its roster following a disappointing 6-8 start, it became clear that upgrades were necessary to remain competitive in the NBA.
Though Richards was brought in to provide depth at center, the Suns have lost three straight games and six of their last seven, raising questions about their roster’s overall effectiveness. With ongoing trade rumors surrounding star forward Kevin Durant, the Suns find themselves in a precarious position.
“We always knew there would be issues,” said head coach Mike Budenholzer. “But we have to face the reality that our current roster may not be strong enough to contend for a championship.”
Richards’ performance thus far has been mixed. The Suns have recorded a 115.2 offensive rating with him on the floor, slightly lower than the 115.3 rating when he is benched. However, the defensive metrics tell a more troubling story, with the team allowing a staggering 121.2 points per 100 possessions while he plays, compared to 116.2 without him.
His net rating stands at negative-6.0 during his time on the court, while the team’s performance without him dips only to negative-0.9. This trend is not new; the Charlotte Hornets experienced similar struggles during Richards’ tenure, recording a negative-9.3 net rating with him on the floor.
Despite showing promise in blocked shots and rebounding, Richards has yet to make a tangible impact in terms of winning. His playoff experience is nonexistent, and he averaged just 17.7 minutes per game with Charlotte over four seasons. Since joining the Suns, he has averaged 23.6 minutes per game, yet his playing time has decreased in recent outings, with two games in the last six where he played fewer than 20 minutes.
“The numbers don’t lie,” Budenholzer said, hinting at a possible shift in strategy. “Sometimes we’re better off with different rotations.”
As the Suns navigate their current predicament, the future remains uncertain. With questions surrounding Durant’s tenure and Bradley Beal’s hefty contract, the center position continues to be a significant concern. Observers believe that Richards was not the answer for the starting five, and the Suns may pursue other options in the offseason.
“We have to look at all possibilities to get back in the title race. It’s crucial,” a team source revealed. “We need to have the right pieces around Devin Booker.”
As discussions regarding the Suns’ strategy unfold, fans and analysts alike will be observing closely whether the franchise can retool its roster in time to improve its standing in the league. The coming summer appears pivotal for the Suns’ aspirations.
