Pirates Call Up Matt Gorski as Roster Changes Announced

INDIANAPOLIS – The Pittsburgh Pirates have selected outfielder Matt Gorski’s contract and recalled right-handed pitcher Mike Burrows from Triple-A Indianapolis, the team announced on Thursday. Gorski is set to make his Major League debut tonight against the Los Angeles Angels.
Gorski, a 27-year-old native of Fishers, Indiana, started the season strong, slashing .300/.325/.529 with seven doubles, three home runs, and 14 RBIs over 18 games in Indianapolis. His performance included an impressive walk-off double and a multi-homer game in April.
Selected in the second round of the 2019 draft from Indiana University, Gorski has a career minor league batting average of .246 with 90 home runs across 465 games. Last season, he hit .257 with 23 homers in Triple-A. Pirates evaluators have noted Gorski’s power potential, although he has struggled with strikeouts, maintaining a nearly 29% strikeout rate during his time in the minors.
As part of the roster changes, outfielder Jack Suwinski has been optioned to Triple-A after struggling this season, recording just a .128 average with one home run in 16 games. To make room for Burrows, left-handed reliever Tim Mayza was moved from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list due to ongoing injury issues.
Burrows, 25, made his Major League debut last year and is being called up again after working through recovery from Tommy John surgery. He has pitched effectively in the minors, maintaining a 4.30 ERA this season with Indianapolis.
The Pirates are aiming to improve their performance at the plate, having struggled this season with a .222 batting average. With Gorski’s addition and the struggles of existing roster members, the team hopes to bolster their offense as they continue their campaign.
