Detroit Pistons Playoff Basketball April 2023

DETROIT, Mich. — The Detroit Pistons are preparing for Game 4 of their playoff series against the New York Knicks today at 1 p.m. at Little Caesars Arena, but they will do so without key player Isaiah Stewart, who has been ruled out due to right knee inflammation.

Stewart, a fifth-year forward, missed the last two games of the regular season, as well as Games 2 and 3 of this playoff series. He initially attempted to play in Game 1 on April 19 but had to leave early in the fourth quarter due to his injury.

Pistons Coach J.B. Bickerstaff expressed concern about the impact Stewart’s absence has on the team. “He was phenomenal,” Bickerstaff said after Game 1. “His effort, how he protected the rim, the energy that he brought was huge. When he’s not on the floor for us, we all have to bring that same intensity.”

In Stewart’s absence, Paul Reed stepped in as the backup center, playing 16 minutes in Game 3 and finishing with four points and eight rebounds. Reed, who was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2020, is entering his first playoff run with Detroit.

Despite the loss in Game 3, the Pistons remain hopeful as they prepare to even the series, currently trailing 2-1. Veteran guard Dennis Schröder has stepped up significantly during the playoffs, averaging 46 points over the first three games, making him a key figure for the team.

Schröder scored the decisive points in Game 2, clinching the Pistons’ first playoff win in 17 years. His performance has made him an invaluable asset, especially in clutch moments. “He’s fearless,” Bickerstaff noted. “There’s no moment too big for him.”

The Pistons aim to harness that same energy and determination as they face the Knicks again today. Game 5 is scheduled for Tuesday in New York, followed by Game 6 back in Detroit if necessary.
