Pistons Return to Court Against Wembanyama-less Spurs

San Antonio, TX — The Detroit Pistons are set to face the San Antonio Spurs on Friday, Feb. 21, at 8:30 p.m. EST, marking their first game since the NBA All-Star break. With a four-game winning streak and rejuvenated roster, the Pistons hope to maintain their momentum against a Spurs team grappling with the significant loss of rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama, who is out for the season due to blood clots.
Detroit clinched their last victory on February 12 against the Chicago Bulls, leading to a nine-day hiatus that some fans fear might disrupt the team’s flow. Despite facing weaker opponents before the break, including three games where they led by over 20 points, the Pistons showed a strong performance, aiming to extend their winning streak against a Spurs team missing its critical player.
The Spurs received devastating news regarding Wembanyama earlier this week, and while his absence simplifies the Pistons’ task, it casts a shadow over the excitement of the matchup. “No one wants to see a player like Wemby sidelined, it takes away from the game,” said Pistons’ coach. “We want to compete against the best, and he’s definitely one of them.”
The news affects both teams significantly, with the Spurs looking to navigate through the remainder of the season without their star player. As San Antonio adapts, the Pistons are keen on leveraging this advantage. “We need to stay aggressive and play our game,” said Pistons’ guard Cade Cunningham. “We’re coming off a good streak, and we don’t want to let that slip away.”
However, the Spurs are not without talent. They recently acquired De’Aaron Fox, along with veteran Chris Paul, both of whom bring vital experience and skills to the court. Though the Spurs have struggled lately, Fox’s scoring ability and Paul’s leadership can still pose challenges for Detroit. “We have to respect their talent,” Cunningham acknowledged. “It’s never easy against a team that knows how to play.”
The matchup will take place at Moody Center in Austin, Texas, instead of the traditional home court, adding another layer of complexity. Detroit enters the game as 4.5-point favorites, reflecting their recent form despite the long layoff.
On the injury front, the Pistons are still missing Jaden Ivey for the season but have benefitted from the additional recovery time. Cade Cunningham, who participated in All-Star weekend, hopes the time off will allow his previously injured ankle to heal completely. “With the time we had off, I’m feeling good. Hopefully, it will help me contribute more,” Cunningham stated.
While past performances show the Pistons struggle after extended breaks, coach believes they are poised for a strong showing. “If we can capture the rhythm we had before the break, we should be in good shape,” he said.
As the game approaches, both teams will look for a decisive win to shift their season narratives. The Pistons aim to prove they are a competitive force, while the Spurs will attempt to adapt without their key player.
