Pittsburgh Riverhounds Vs New York City Fc Soccer Match

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – The U.S. Open Cup continues this week with the Round of 32, featuring a match between Major League Soccer’s New York City FC (NYCFC) and United Soccer League’s Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC. The game is set for Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at 7 p.m. ET at Highmark Stadium.

This historic tournament has seen MLS teams dominate since its inception, with an MLS squad lifting the trophy every year since 2000. The Riverhounds have reached this stage after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Columbus Crew 2, a team from MLS Next Pro, on April 15.

While the Riverhounds advanced through an impressive performance, they come into this game struggling, having lost their last three matches in all competitions. Head coach Bob Lilley remains optimistic, citing recent improvements in player health as a positive sign.

“It’s all about getting our confidence back on the field. We have a good chance against any MLS team at home,” Lilley said. “The fans can make a difference, and we will need to capitalize on our home advantage.”

NYCFC is returning to the Open Cup after missing out on the previous tournament. The club has never won this competition, despite New York teams collectively holding the record for the most titles with 26. However, they face an uphill battle, as they have only one away victory in their seven Open Cup appearances.

“We understand the significance of this tournament and the challenge. Every game is an opportunity to win,” said NYCFC’s head coach.

Both teams are expected to field competitive lineups, with the Riverhounds welcoming back key players from injury, while NYCFC will miss suspended midfielder Maxi Moralez. The match promises to be intense, as each team vies for a place in the quarterfinals.

Viewers can watch the match live on CBS Sports Network and stream it through Paramount+. The stakes are high as both teams seek to make their mark in this prestigious tournament.
