Ponting Hails Prabhsimran as IPL’s Rising Star Ahead of 2025 Season

AHMEDABAD, India — Ricky Ponting, head coach of the Punjab Kings, has labeled Prabhsimran Singh as one of the most talented players in the Indian Premier League (IPL) ahead of the start of the 2025 season. Speaking at a media interaction, Ponting expressed his high expectations for the 24-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman who has been with the franchise since 2019.
“I’ve told him that already. Talent-wise, I think he’s as good as anybody in the tournament,” Ponting said, aiming to spark a breakthrough season for Singh, who has shown flashes of brilliance but has yet to deliver consistently on the big stage.
Singh, retained by Punjab Kings along with Shashank Singh, has been a part of the team for six seasons, and this year represents a pivotal opportunity for him to step up. However, the franchise has had its struggles historically, having reached the playoffs only twice since the IPL’s inception.
In addition to his praise for Singh, Ponting highlighted South African all-rounder Marco Jansen as a key player to watch this season. “I think Marco Jansen is going to be a real surprise. He’s an international player that’s done well in the last couple of years. I think his career is going to get better and better,” he stated.
The Punjab Kings will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on March 25.
Singh’s aggressive gameplay style has drawn attention in the domestic circuit, especially as the T20 format of cricket favors explosive batsmen. Born on August 10, 2000, in Patiala, Punjab, Singh has made a mark in his domestic performances where he has participated extensively across various formats.
Yet, as the Kings aim for their first playoff appearance in 11 years, they will rely not only on Singh but also on new captain Shreyas Iyer, who is taking the helm after the franchise made significant changes in its leadership structure.
“The leadership group of Shreyas and Ricky comes with experience and one that is proven. Both are among the finest in their respective roles,” said Brad Haddin, Punjab’s head of cricket operations.
The Punjab Kings have faced challenges over the years, being one of the three founding teams in the IPL without a title. While the franchise celebrated some bright spots in its history, including a finals appearance in 2014, it has struggled to convert talent into consistent performances.
As Singh prepares for the new season, he recognizes the stakes: “I am focused on what I can contribute to the team. It’s about winning matches for Punjab Kings, not individual accolades,” he said.
With the addition of several strong players, including Josh Inglis and Glenn Maxwell, alongside established talents like Yuzvendra Chahal and Lockie Ferguson, the Kings are hopeful for a turnaround this season.
As the first match approaches, all eyes will be on how Singh and the team adapt under the new leadership. The franchise aims not just to compete but to redefine its narrative during IPL 2025.
