Portland Faces Risk of Rising Costs for Sharpe’s Contract Extension

Portland, Oregon — The Trail Blazers must act swiftly to secure a contract extension for young player Shaedon Sharpe before his value potentially increases. The deadline for negotiations is approaching on October 20, 2025.
On a recent episode of the We Like the Blazers podcast, hosts Brandon Mullen and Conor Bergin discussed the implications of delaying the extension. Mullen stated, “If they don’t act now, there is a massive risk that the cost goes up.” Sharpe’s current valuation stands at approximately $14.2 million annually, according to estimates by analyst John Hollinger.
Evaluating young players like Sharpe poses challenges, as Mullen explained. “For players who are 22 years old, pricing their future worth requires considering various factors, including their development and surrounding team dynamics.” He added that contract extensions based on potential could range from 15% to 21% of the salary cap.
Historically, the Blazers have extended players at higher amounts. Mullen estimated Sharpe’s extension could reach five years for $140 million, stating, “I think that’s what it’s going to be; the Blazers would be smart to do that.” He highlighted comparable players, such as Trey Murphy III, whose recent extension reflects a sharp increase in value from averaging 14 points to 21 points per game.
The podcast also touched on other recent contract extensions in the league, illustrating how higher salary expectations for young talent are becoming the norm. Players like Jabari Smith Jr. and Trey Murphy III received substantial deals, opening discussions about Sharpe’s potential earnings.
The need for prompt action is further emphasized by the injury to fellow player Scoot Henderson, prompting consideration of Sharpe’s role within the team. Conor mentioned the importance of fitting new players into the rotation, especially during this pivotal moment.
As the deadline approaches, the Trail Blazers face a significant decision: act now to secure Sharpe’s future with the team or risk paying a premium later.
