PORTLAND, Ore. — As the Portland Trail Blazers face a critical stretch of the season, rookie Donovan Clingan is beginning to shine despite a challenging 2024 draft class. Selected to address the team’s depth issues as a center, Clingan’s rookie season has been characterized by limited opportunities. With an average of 6.0 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.6 blocks over 18.4 minutes per game, his stats initially went unnoticed amid the Blazers’ rebuilding efforts.

However, with injuries to Deandre Ayton (left calf strain) and Robert Williams III (left knee soreness) forcing the team to reevaluate its center rotation, Clingan has stepped into a larger role. March has seen him average 7.1 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.8 blocks in 24.5 minutes, a timeline of growth that general manager Joe Cronin is keen on for the team’s future.

“Donovan has shown flashes of brilliance that we want to capitalize on,” Cronin said. “His ability to protect the rim and contribute defensively is something we’ve been needing.”

Statistically, Clingan ranks among the top five in rebounds and blocks per 36 minutes, reflecting his potential as a critical asset as the Blazers attempt to foster a competitive core. The team’s defensive identity, which has improved throughout the season, is now significantly influenced by Clingan’s presence in the paint.

Although the Blazers have struggled with consistency, there is optimism within the team’s camp. “We miss Ayton’s midrange shooting, but Donovan’s intensity and high IQ on the court have been game-changers,” a source within the organization remarked.

While Clingan’s continued development is promising, the Blazers also have an eye on upcoming draft prospects. With projections indicating a strong 2025 draft class, particular attention is directed at potential players from Duke, Michigan State, and Arizona. The Blazers currently face tough decisions on which players will best fit their evolving roster.

Among those under consideration is Kon Knueppel of Duke, who boasts a more fluid game suited for the modern NBA, alongside other intriguing prospects like Jase Richardson and Carter Bryant. The team’s priorities will not only focus on talent but also ensuring a seamless fit among the current roster.

“We’re looking for players who can contribute not just with raw skill, but also mesh well with our existing core,” Cronin added. “Shooting and versatility are key factors we’re considering.”

The Blazers also realize that as they evaluate their future, the time to make changes is upon them. The looming decisions about roster veterans—including the futures of Ayton, Jerami Grant, and Matisse Thybulle—will determine the direction of their rebuild.

“We want to find the right blend of experienced players and our younger core,” said Cronin. “This offseason will be crucial for us to solidify that.”

Despite sitting three games behind the Phoenix Suns and Dallas Mavericks for the final play-in spot, the team remains determined. Improvement in defense and player development may provide the edge they need to push for a playoff spot.

“Our young guys are showing they can handle the pressure,” the source noted. “It’s going to be interesting to see how it all shapes up in the end.”
