Potgieter Leads Final Round, Campbell Chases Mexico Open Glory

VALLARTA, Mexico — The final round of the 2025 Mexico Open at VidantaWorld promises unprecedented excitement as 20-year-old Aldrich Potgieter attempts to secure his first PGA Tour victory against veteran Brian Campbell. Potgieter, who leads by just one shot, finished the third round at 20-under-par, with Campbell closely trailing at 19-under.
Potgieter’s journey has become a remarkable story. After dominating the second round with a score of 61, he held a commanding four-shot advantage heading into the weekend. However, the pressure mounted as challengers like Campbell and Stephan Jaeger closed the gap.
“I’m just going to stick to my game plan,” Potgieter said during an interview. “I know I can play well under pressure; I just have to keep focused.”
As the sun sets on Vallarta, Campbell looks to pull off a comeback that echoes his days as an amateur star at the University of Illinois. He spent eight years on the Korn Ferry Tour, and Sunday will mark his first time in the top five heading into a final round, an opportunity many thought was behind him.
“It’s a blessing to be here this quickly,” Campbell expressed after completing a bogey-free round of 64 in Saturday’s action. “It’s why I’ve worked so hard to get back. I’m enjoying the moment and will see where the day takes me.”
Bouncing back from struggles that saw him finish 180th in the FedEx Cup standings in 2017, Campbell’s path has been fraught with challenges. After finishing 30th on the Korn Ferry Tour points list in 2019, he fought hard to reclaim a spot on the PGA Tour.
Despite Potgieter’s youth, he’s showcased remarkable skill on the course, currently leading in Strokes Gained Putting (8.12) and second in Strokes Gained Off the Tee (4.25). Campbell, however, excels with a different approach, leading in Strokes Gained Around the Green (4.65) and seventh in Strokes Gained Approaching the Green (5.58).
Several other contenders are vying for a chance at victory as well, with Stephan Jaeger, Alex Smalley, Aaron Rai, and Ben Griffin all within six shots of Potgieter’s lead. As low scores have become a hallmark of VidantaWorld, the fourth round could shift dramatically as birdies are ripe for the taking.
Golf fans can catch the final round on Golf Channel and NBC starting at 1 p.m. ET, providing coverage of what surely will be a captivating crescendo to the tournament.
As this intriguing juxtaposition unfolds—youth versus experience—fans and players alike eagerly await what Sunday brings at the Mexico Open.
