Baltimore, Maryland — The 150th running of the Preakness Stakes is set for Saturday, May 17, 2025, at Pimlico Race Course. After the Kentucky Derby winner, Sovereignty, withdrew from the race, the spotlight turns to nine contenders vying for the prestigious title as the second leg of the Triple Crown.

Leading the charge is Journalism, who finished second in the Derby and is the morning line favorite at 8-5. Trained by Michael McCarthy and ridden by jockey Umberto Rispoli, Journalism has shown considerable promise in his career. ‘Look, Journalism is definitely the horse to beat; he has already proven that,’ said Sandman trainer Mark Casse.

Another potential threat is Sandman, who finished in seventh place during the Derby. The horse will race again under veteran jockey John Velasquez. With a smaller field of eight horses, the competition is expected to be fierce. Trainer Mark Casse expressed confidence in Sandman’s chances for redemption in this smaller field.

Among the newcomers, Goal Oriented is making waves despite having raced only twice. Trained by Bob Baffert, he went off at 6-1 odds after showing early speed in his previous races. ‘With clear upside potential, he has yet to face horses of this caliber,’ said analysts. However, the competition could pose a significant challenge for the young horse.

Each horse in the field will race a distance of 1 3/16 miles on dirt, competing for a yet undisclosed purse. This year’s event is historic, marking the last Preakness to be run at Pimlico before renovations take place, forcing future races to Laurel Park.

The absence of Sovereignty, whose trainer Bill Mott has chosen to prepare him for the Belmont Stakes, leaves room for other competitors to grab the spotlight. Mott’s decision reflects a broader trend among trainers prioritizing their horses’ health over the immediate pursuit of a Triple Crown.

The Preakness Stakes will air live at 7:01 p.m. ET on NBC. Fans are encouraged to follow the unique narratives each horse brings to this classic event, as the race promises to deliver excitement and competition.
