Pittsburgh, PA — The Pittsburgh Penguins and Nashville Predators have finalized a significant trade ahead of the 2025 NHL trade deadline, acquiring notable players in exchange. According to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, the Penguins are trading winger Michael Bunting to the Predators.

In return, Nashville will send center Tommy Novak and defenseman Luke Schenn to Pittsburgh, along with a fourth-round draft pick in 2026. This deal marks a pivotal moment for both teams, both of which are currently outside the playoff picture.

Bunting, who joined the Penguins last season after a trade with the Carolina Hurricanes, has struggled to find his footing in Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old has netted just 14 goals and 15 assists in 58 games this season, a stark contrast to his previous seasons, where he averaged over 49 points annually. Despite this, the Predators are hopeful that a change of scenery will revive his performance.

“When Bunting is at his best, he’s a valuable top-six winger,” a Penguins source said. “We believe he can regain his form with Nashville.”

Pittsburgh’s acquisition of Novak, 27, is pivotal. A versatile forward, Novak is in his first season of a three-year contract worth $10.5 million but has faced challenges this season, recording only 13 goals and nine assists in 52 games. His playing time has dropped, averaging just over 13 minutes per game.

“We’re excited about bringing Novak on board,” said Penguins General Manager Kyle Dubas. “He brings youthful energy and potential to our roster.”

Schenn, 35, adds experience to the Penguins’ defense, having played for multiple teams over his 17-year career, including a stint with the Predators since 2023. He has six points in 61 games this season and is known for his defensive prowess and physical play.

This trade is perceived as a strategic move by the Penguins, who are looking to reinforce their roster despite sitting out of the playoff contention. With the loss of Bunting, analysts speculate that this trade may initiate further adjustments to the Penguins’ lineup.

However, Bunting will not join the Predators immediately as he is currently on injured reserve following an appendectomy.

“There’s a lot of optimism in Nashville regarding this deal,” said a source close to the Predators. “Our focus is on improving and positioning ourselves for a playoff push in the coming seasons.”

Both teams hope these changes lead to improved performance as the NHL season progresses. After the trade, it remains to be seen what further adjustments Pittsburgh might make as they continue to prepare for the future.
