MONTREAL — The Montreal Canadiens are adjusting their lineup as they prepare for Game 4 of their playoff series against the Washington Capitals on Sunday night. Goalie Sam Montembeault is sidelined with an undisclosed injury, prompting the Canadiens to recall Cayden Primeau from their AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket.

Montembeault, who has been a key player for Montreal this season with a record of 31-24-7 and a goals-against average of 2.82, left Game 3 during the second period. His absence creates uncertainty for the Canadiens as they strive to equalize the series, currently trailing 2-1.

Primeau was initially watching Game 3 from a teammate’s home in Laval when he received a call from Laval coach Pascal Vincent urging him to head to the Bell Centre. After learning of Montembeault’s exit, Primeau sped to the arena, arriving in time for the final period of the game.

“I needed my equipment, but I wasn’t sure if I would even be able to dress,” Primeau said. “I just wanted to make sure I was here.” Although he didn’t play in Game 3, Primeau experienced the electric atmosphere of the Bell Centre, an environment he is eager to embrace as he backs up rookie Jakub Dobes.

Dobes replaced Montembeault in Game 3 and played well, helping lead the Canadiens to a 6-3 victory. With Primeau available as an emergency goalie, he is prepared to step onto the ice if called upon.

On the other side, the Capitals are also facing goalie uncertainty. Logan Thompson is a game-time decision after leaving Game 3 with an injury. He practiced during the Capitals’ morning skate, but Coach Spencer Carbery indicated a decision would be made closer to game time.

Montreal has strong momentum from their Game 3 win and hopes to build on that with the support of their fans. Primeau expressed excitement not only about being called up but also about witnessing the playoff atmosphere. “Just being here and feeling the energy was incredible,” he remarked.

As the series continues, both teams face critical decisions that could impact their playoff success, with depth and resilience becoming key factors in this high-stakes matchup.
