Princess Diaries Franchise To Continue With Lim Directing Third Installment
The “Princess Diaries” franchise is set to expand with a third installment under the direction of Lim, known for her work on “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Crazy Rich Asians.” Lim, who made her directorial debut with “Joy Ride,” is eagerly stepping into the director’s seat once again. In a statement, Lim expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”
The upcoming film will be produced by Debra Martin Chase, who previously produced both films in the “Princess Diaries” series. Naia Cucukov, Lim’s producing partner at 100 Tigers, and Melissa Stack will serve as executive producers, with Flora Greeson penning the screenplay.
The original “Princess Diaries,” released in 2001, starred Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, a teen who discovers she is heir to the fictional kingdom of Genovia, with Julie Andrews playing her grandmother. The movie was a significant box office success, grossing a total of $300 million worldwide alongside its 2004 sequel, “The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement.” Hathaway has confirmed her return by sharing the announcement video on social media.
Lim’s diverse credits span across television and film, including being a writer and producer on series such as “One Tree Hill” and “Lethal Weapon.” She co-created the production company 100 Tigers with Cucukov to highlight female-forward, cross-cultural stories. This venture has projects in development at major platforms including Amazon, MGM, HBO Max, and ABC.
As excitement builds around the forthcoming movie, Lim and her team continue to work on the script, which remains under wraps. Fans of “The Princess Diaries” can expect the story to continue from its predecessors rather than rebooting the series.
Representations for the involved parties include Paradigm and Ginsburg, Daniels, Kallis for Lim, CAA and Del Shaw Moonves for Chase, and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment for Stack.
