A’s Promote Outfield Prospect Denzel Clarke Amid Losing Streak

Oakland, CA – The Oakland Athletics are set to promote outfield prospect Denzel Clarke from Triple-A Las Vegas, with a source confirming the news on Friday, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. This marks Clarke’s first call-up to Major League Baseball after being added to the 40-man roster last November.
A’s manager Mark Kotsay announced today that infielder J.J. Bleday is headed to the 10-day injured list due to a left hamstring strain. This change could lead to a broader set of roster moves following the team’s ninth consecutive loss, making them the first team in MLB to drop nine games in a row this season.
The A’s are scheduled to face the Philadelphia Phillies, who have won seven straight games and currently lead the National League with a record of 32-20. Clarke, 25, is a Toronto native, but he played college baseball at California State University, Northridge. The A’s drafted him in the fourth round of the 2021 draft, taking a chance on his physical potential despite concerns about his hitting skills.
Standing at 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 220 pounds, Clarke is recognized for his raw power and notable athleticism. Reports from the offseason highlighted his impressive speed and projected him as an elite defender in center field.
During his time at Triple-A, Clarke has excelled, posting a .288 batting average with a .436 on-base percentage and .419 slugging. He has yet to hit a home run but has driven in 21 runs while stealing seven bases. The A’s are hopeful that Clarke will provide a much-needed spark to the struggling lineup as they look to improve their 22-29 record.
While Clarke’s promotion is exciting, it raises questions about Bleday’s future. After entering the season with high expectations, Bleday has struggled, slashing .202/.292/.368 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in 46 games. Once a key player, he may find himself reduced to a role as a fourth outfielder or sent back to Triple-A.
If Clarke can perform well in the majors, he might solidify his spot in center field, leaving Bleday without a role in the A’s lineup.
