Purdue Center Will Berg Enters Transfer Portal After Two Seasons

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Will Berg, a 7-foot-2 center for the Purdue Boilermakers, has entered the transfer portal following his sophomore season. The announcement came after Purdue’s recent Sweet 16 loss to Houston, with Berg’s agency WEAVE confirming the news.
Berg, originally from Stockholm, Sweden, redshirted during the 2022-23 season and has appeared in 36 games over the last two seasons, averaging 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds. His lack of playing time was a notable aspect of his career at Purdue, as he struggled to secure a consistent role in a team that often relied on its center.
Despite high expectations following the departure of former National Player of the Year Zach Edey, Berg saw limited action, averaging just 5.3 minutes over his career with the Boilermakers. This season, he played in 22 games, showing flashes of potential with an impressive shooting percentage of 84.2%.
Berg’s best performance came in a win over Northern Kentucky, where he made a significant impact in just 17 minutes on the court. He also started in all three NCAA tournament games against Yale, Alabama, and Marquette.
“I always wanted to prove my worth on the court,” Berg said during a press conference after the Sweet 16 game. “I appreciate the support from my teammates and coaching staff, but I feel it’s best to explore new opportunities.”
Berg joins junior forward Brian Waddell, who is also seeking a new program, in the transfer portal. Both players faced challenges in earning meaningful minutes on the floor amidst a competitive roster.
Purdue’s head coach Matt Painter acknowledged Berg’s contributions, stating, “Will brought a unique skill set to our team. We wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
As Berg looks for a new program, Purdue continues to assess their roster and prepare for the upcoming season.
