No. 17 Purdue Faces No. 13 Oregon in High-Stakes Big Ten Clash
EUGENE, Ore. — No. 17 Purdue (14-4, 6-1 Big Ten) will face No. 13 Oregon (15-2, 4-2 Big Ten) in a high-stakes conference showdown Saturday at Matthew Knight Arena. The game, set for 3 p.m. ET, will be broadcast on NBC and features two teams vying for position in the competitive Big Ten race.
Purdue enters the game riding a six-game winning streak, including five consecutive Big Ten victories by an average margin of 20.4 points. The Boilermakers have been dominant defensively, allowing just 60.3 points per game during their streak. Their defensive efficiency ranks third in the Big Ten, with opponents turning the ball over on 21% of possessions, the highest rate in the conference.
Offensively, Purdue has been equally impressive, leading the Big Ten in effective field goal percentage. The team’s frontcourt duo is shooting a combined 61% and 73%, respectively, while all five of Purdue’s top scorers are shooting 49% or better from the field. Guard Braden Smith has been a standout, averaging 16.1 points, 9.3 assists, and 4.4 rebounds per game, making him a strong candidate for Big Ten Player of the Year.
Oregon, meanwhile, has shown resilience in close games, with recent wins over Maryland, Ohio State, and Penn State. However, the Ducks have struggled defensively, ranking 13th in the Big Ten in defensive efficiency. A 109-77 loss to Illinois earlier this season highlighted their vulnerabilities, particularly on their home court.
Purdue coach Matt Painter and Oregon’s Dana Altman have a long history, dating back to their days as Missouri Valley Conference rivals at Southern Illinois and Creighton, respectively. Painter’s Boilermakers have been preparing for the challenge, arriving in Eugene on Thursday after a day off in Seattle due to travel concerns.
Oregon’s 7-foot center, N’Faly Dante, will be a key matchup for Purdue. Dante averages 13.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, and has blocked 30 shots this season. Purdue’s defense has been effective against post players recently, but Dante’s ability to step out and hit threes adds another dimension to his game.
With both teams in need of a Quadrant 1 win to bolster their NCAA Tournament resumes, Saturday’s game carries significant implications for the Big Ten standings and postseason seeding.
