EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The Los Angeles Kings are gearing up to battle the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the playoffs, with focus on the promising performance of Quinton Byfield. The Kings and Oilers series begins Monday, marking the fourth consecutive postseason clash between these teams.

During the regular season, the Kings finished with a record of 48-29-5, earning them the home ice advantage against the Oilers, who ranked higher in the standings with a 48-25-9 record. The Kings, however, won the season series 3-1, showcasing their potential to upset the Oilers in a playoff setting.

While the Kings have long been criticized for lacking a standout superstar, 22-year-old Byfield may change that perception. In his fourth playoff round and after a significant growth in his role, Byfield is now playing center on a line with Kevin Fiala and Alex Laferriere, which has added depth to the Kings’ offense.

Kings coach Jim Hiller highlighted Byfield’s progress, noting, “This year is a big difference. He complements our key players well, and it’s made us stronger.” In the recent game against the Oilers, Byfield demonstrated his skill by assisting in building a 4-0 lead. He scored the Kings’ second goal after capitalizing on a turnover.

Despite a challenging series against the Oilers, known for stars like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, Byfield expressed confidence, saying, “It’s a challenge, but you dig in more against them.” His ability to learn from veterans like Anže Kopitar and Phillip Danault has already marked him as a player to watch.

Byfield’s performance this season included a career-high 23 goals and 31 assists. His chemistry with Fiala has elevated both players, marking Byfield as a key factor in the Kings’ strategy as they seek playoff success. With a significant amount of ice time, he played nearly 23 minutes in Game 1, the most of any Kings forward.

The upcoming games will test the Kings’ resolve and depth against a formidable Oilers team. For Byfield, this is the chance to establish himself as a difference-maker in the playoffs, where reputations are often made.
