Radio Presenter Takes on Challenging Pedalo Charity Event
Radio presenter Toby Tarrant has embarked on a demanding charity challenge, navigating a giant unicorn pedalo for an extended period each day. This endeavor aims to cover 56 miles and was initially set along the River Thames. However, due to adverse weather conditions and strong currents, Tarrant’s ambitious route had to be adjusted.
The Radio X host has now set his course on a 40-mile journey along the River Wey, after which he will join the Thames to reach the finishing line at Putney this Friday morning. Tarrant started his quest on Monday, October 7, from Wharf, with his second day beginning from Send on the River Wey.
Despite the initial excitement, Tarrant confessed that the challenge is taking a toll on his body. “If you asked me at two o’clock yesterday, I was genuinely enjoying it. But then the last four hours were torture; I just hit an absolute wall,” he said, reflecting on the physical demands of the journey. “I’ve woken up this morning and my hips are just like concrete,” he added, anticipating another day of wet conditions.
As the event progresses, the weather has presented significant obstacles, causing Tarrant to rely on additional safety measures, including two individuals accompanying him in a canoe due to the hazardous river sections. At the start of the day’s leg, he remarked on the unrelenting rain, saying, “Physically, I’m okay. Mentally, knowing that I have to do it all again, and it hasn’t helped that it has absolutely chucked it down this morning. I am completely soaked through!”
Despite the hardships, Tarrant’s efforts have garnered considerable support, raising £70,000 for Global Radio’s Make Some Noise charity. This organization provides assistance to small charities across the UK, ranging from foodbanks to support lines for domestic abuse, and from bereavement support to homeless assistance.
Listeners and supporters can follow Tarrant’s progress through the Tarrant vs the Thames: One Wey or Another tracker, and contributions to his cause are welcomed to help further the charity’s mission.
