ROME, Italy — Emma Raducanu progressed to the second round of the Italian Open after Belinda Bencic retired from their match on Tuesday. Bencic dropped the first set and decided to withdraw.

The match was part of a busy day of first-round action on the women’s side, with several top players, including Naomi Osaka and Jiri Lehecka, competing on the court. Raducanu managed to stay focused, securing her victory despite the drama unfolding around her, advancing with a final score of 6-3, 4-6, 3-0 (retirement).

“I’m really pleased to have gotten through,” said Raducanu. “Bencic is a tough competitor.”

Other highlights from the day included a late-night victory by Lithuanian qualifier, who took down a Bosnian opponent in a thrilling match that ended shortly before midnight CET. Meanwhile, Colombia’s player made headlines with a surprising win over an experienced rival.

Jiri Lehecka had a solid performance, defeating his opponent handily as well. “Today’s match was important for my confidence,” said Lehecka after the match.

On the men’s side, Fabio Fognini, participating in what he announced would be his final Italian Open, won his first-round match against a British player. Fognini expressed mixed emotions about his farewell, saying, “I think it’s a good time to say goodbye.”

As the tournament progresses, more thrilling matches are expected. The Italian Open serves as a crucial preparation event ahead of the French Open later this month.
