Rafael Devers Skips Red Sox Fan Fest Amid Franchise Face Concerns
BOSTON — Rafael Devers, the Boston Red Sox‘s highest-paid player, will not attend the team’s annual Fenway Fest this weekend, citing a last-minute scheduling conflict. The event, previously known as Winter Weekend, was moved to Fenway Park this year, offering fans a unique winter experience at the historic ballpark.
Devers, who has historically avoided such public appearances, was initially scheduled to attend alongside other players like Pedro Martinez, Kutter Crawford, and newcomer Walker Buehler. However, his absence has sparked discussions about his role as the face of the franchise. Team officials have privately expressed a desire for Devers to engage more with fans and media, but the reserved slugger has consistently prioritized his performance on the field over promotional activities.
“Privately, team officials have expressed a desire to push Devers to do more front-facing outreach,” reported Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “The mild-mannered Devers has never viewed doing so as a priority.”
Devers’ reluctance to embrace the spotlight is not new. Last September, he faced criticism for leaving the clubhouse without addressing reporters after a loss. Despite this, his on-field contributions remain undeniable. In 2023, Devers publicly voiced concerns about the team’s roster during spring training, urging the front office to make necessary moves. His $300 million contract extension in 2022 reflects the organization’s confidence in his abilities, even if he shies away from the limelight.
Fenway Fest, held on a snowy Saturday, was a hit among fans. Attendees enjoyed behind-the-scenes access, including tours of the clubhouse and panels featuring players like Lucas Giolito, Triston Casas, and manager Alex Cora. Netflix also previewed its upcoming documentary, “The Clubhouse: A Year with the Red Sox,” offering a glimpse into the team’s inner workings.
While Devers’ absence was noted, fans like Craig Pieniazek from Palmer, Mass., praised the event. “Sox nailed this thing,” Pieniazek said. “Fenway Park in the snow is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen.”
As the Red Sox gear up for the 2024 season, Devers’ focus remains on delivering results on the diamond. “They pay me good, I play baseball, and I hit homers,” Devers once said during a 2021 batting practice session. For now, that seems to be enough for both the player and the franchise.
