KL Rahul Leads India to Victory in Champions Trophy Semi-Final

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — KL Rahul‘s decisive performance propelled India past New Zealand in the first semi-final of the Champions Trophy on March 4, 2025, as they chased down a target of 265 runs with 11 balls remaining.
Rahul, batting at No. 6, entered the fray following the dismissal of Axar Patel, with India needing 87 runs from 90 balls. Displaying composure under pressure, he crafted vital partnerships with Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya, finishing with an unbeaten 42 off 34 balls. His efforts helped secure a four-wicket victory, with India reaching a total of 267 runs for the loss of six wickets in 48.1 overs.
Rahul’s performance came after criticism in earlier matches, with former India captain Anil Kumble noting the pressure he faces. “There is a lot of pressure on him. If he does well, it’s expected. If he fails in one innings, suddenly the whole world comes after him,” Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo Match Day. “He showed what he is capable of today.”
The match was pivotal for both teams, as it set the stage for the final showdown. India’s player of the match, Rohit Sharma, scored 84 runs off 98 balls and contributed significantly to the chase. With Rahul and Sharma in fine form, the victory solidified India’s position as a strong contender in the tournament.
Post-match, Rahul reflected on his innings, acknowledging the challenge of navigating through different batting positions. He emphasized the importance of staying adaptable and how much this innings meant to him personally. “It felt great to contribute to the team’s success like this,” he stated, showcasing his commitment to the game.
Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar also weighed in, suggesting that Rahul thrives when he embraces an aggressive batting style. “Sometimes we wonder if a little time is good for KL Rahul, because then he is only thinking of attacking,” Manjrekar remarked. “Today he wanted to take the onus of attacking. When he plays attacking shots, he looks like the player we know he can be.” This sentiment echoed the optimism surrounding Rahul’s future performances in the tournament.
With this win, India advances to the Champions Trophy final, looking to secure another prestigious title. Their next challenge will be against a formidable opponent, but the morale within the squad is high, bolstered by the key performances in this semi-final.
Gautam Gambhir, India’s coach, reiterated the positivity in the camp following the victory, asserting that the team is focused on maintaining momentum. “When you play 300 games, you will end up getting out to some of the spinners – so that’s okay,” Gambhir said, supporting Rahul’s performance and experience in high-stakes matches.
