INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — Las Vegas Raiders head coach Pete Carroll discussed team dynamics and strategies during a media session at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. With the draft approaching, Carroll highlighted the importance of collaboration among his coaching staff and the significance of a strong running game.

Carroll’s remarks came as the Raiders aim to strengthen their roster for the upcoming season. He acknowledged the influence of All-Pro edge rusher Maxx Crosby, praising him as a role model for prospects like North Carolina‘s Rucker, who has expressed admiration for Crosby’s on-field capabilities.

“In putting the staff together, I really wanted people with whom I could share ideas and concepts,” Carroll said. He emphasized the value of both familiarity and fresh perspectives, ensuring that new staff members learn essential elements from seasoned coaches.

“Patrick [Graham] and Robbie Leonard were right at the top of the list to get that done,” Carroll noted, indicating that their presence has enhanced team cohesion and strategy.

Addressing team decision-making, Carroll stated, “We’re going to be collaborative. It hasn’t been any different in the last 20 years.” He emphasized the need for open dialogue among his coaching team, particularly regarding complex decisions.

One topic that Carroll addressed was the often-overlooked importance of the running game. “The quarterback position needs to be supported in every way possible,” he explained, “and that takes a combination of elements that make up the support of the QB.” He added that a strong running attack is crucial for controlling the game and alleviating pressure on the quarterback.

Reflecting on his past with the Seattle Seahawks, Carroll remarked, “It’s still home to me,” highlighting the deep connection he forged with the Seattle community. “I’m really grateful for that,” he stated, acknowledging the fans’ support and their role in creating a formidable home-field advantage.

Carroll also discussed the integration of coaches from the college level into his staff, pointing out the advantages this brings in evaluating draft prospects. “The guys coming out of college football have a connection with the players,” he said, noting their familiarity with recruits enhances the team’s intel during the draft.

With speculation surrounding the availability of veteran quarterbacks like Matthew Stafford, Carroll responded cautiously. “He’s already on a team,” he said, reiterating the need for the Raiders to focus on their current roster and the competition for the starting quarterback position. “We’re going to give them a chance,” he assured, alluding to the ongoing evaluation process for potential starting candidates.
