Raiders Consider Trading Quarterback Aidan O’Connell Amid Draft Preparations

Las Vegas, NV – The Las Vegas Raiders are exploring the possibility of trading quarterback Aidan O'Connell as the NFL Draft approaches, creating more uncertainty about his future with the team. Last season, O’Connell alternated with Gardner Minshew, neither of whom could significantly improve the struggling Raiders offense, which won only four games.
New general manager John Spytek prioritized finding a better quarterback solution this offseason. In March, he acquired veteran quarterback Geno Smith from the Seattle Seahawks, sending a third-round pick in exchange. Smith, who previously played under head coach Pete Carroll in Seattle, is expected to start for the Raiders this season.
The Raiders’ recent trade for Smith raises questions about O’Connell’s role on the team. After starting 17 games over two seasons, O’Connell’s performance failed to inspire confidence in the new coaching staff, which has no direct ties to him. Reports suggest that the team may look to trade him during the Draft, possibly for a Day 3 pick.
O’Connell’s statistics include 1,612 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and four interceptions across nine games last season. While he gained experience, analysts have noted that he lacks the standout traits needed for long-term success as a starter in the league.
As the draft nears, speculation is growing that the Raiders might target quarterbacks such as Ole Miss‘ Jaxson Dart, Ohio State‘s Will Howard, or Texas‘ Quinn Ewers. Utilizing a Day 3 pick to trade O’Connell could add another promising player to the roster.
Should the Raiders decide to move O’Connell, they will likely do so if they identify suitable options to bolster their quarterback position. With the upcoming draft, the organization aims to improve its roster and potentially secure a quarterback capable of long-term success.
