LAS VEGAS, NEVADA – The Las Vegas Raiders have fired special teams coordinator Tom McMahon following a disappointing loss to the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. The decision was made after the team’s special teams unit struggled significantly, contributing to their poor season record of 2-7.

The Raiders’ special teams came under scrutiny after a blocked punt against the Broncos, setting up a game-winning field goal for Denver. Additionally, kicker Daniel Carlson missed a crucial 48-yard field goal that could have tied the game in the fourth quarter. Carlson has made only 12 of 16 field goals and 11 of 12 extra points this season.

McMahon, 56, had been with the Raiders since 2022, initially hired under former head coach Josh McDaniels. He was retained by interim head coach Antonio Pierce and current head coach Pete Carroll. Despite being a longtime NFL coach with a history of developing successful kickers and punters, this season’s performance led to his dismissal.

Reports indicate that McMahon and Carroll exchanged heated words on the sidelines during the game, indicating rising tensions within the team coaching staff. The decision to fire McMahon marks a significant shift, as he was one of the few assistants to keep his job following the change in leadership.

As the Raiders look to recover from their tough start, assistant special teams coaches Kade Rannings and Derius Swinton remain on staff. The team hopes that changes within the special teams unit will help address their recent struggles and improve their overall performance moving forward.

The Raiders are currently ranked among the bottom 10 teams in the NFL for field goal and extra point success rates. With the playoffs seeming increasingly out of reach, managerial changes may continue as the franchise searches for a way to turn their season around.
