Las Vegas Raiders General Manager John Spytek

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — The Las Vegas Raiders named John Spytek as their new general manager on Wednesday, tasking him with overhauling a struggling roster and addressing the team’s dire quarterback situation. Spytek, previously the assistant general manager, brings eight years of experience from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he held multiple roles.

The Raiders’ quarterback woes were evident throughout the 2024 season, with Aidan O'Connell and Gardner Minshew sharing starting duties but failing to establish themselves as long-term solutions. The team is now expected to explore veteran free-agent options, with Jameis Winston emerging as a potential target.

Winston, the 2015 No. 1 overall pick, spent the 2024 season with the Cleveland Browns, starting seven games and appearing in 12. He threw 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions with a 61.1% completion rate, showcasing both his strong arm and turnover-prone tendencies. Despite his inconsistencies, Winston’s experience and leadership could provide value to a rebuilding Raiders team.

“Jameis Winston would be an adequate backup with a ton of experience,” said an NFL analyst. “He can serve as a veteran leader and wouldn’t demand a sizeable contract, making him a low-risk option.”

The Raiders’ current quarterback room lacks a clear starter, and while drafting a top prospect in 2025 remains an ideal scenario, the team may opt for a short-term fix in free agency. Winston, who took over as Cleveland’s starter after Deshaun Watson‘s injury in Week 7, was eventually benched in Week 16 for Dorian Thompson-Robinson.

Las Vegas boasts a young core of playmakers, including tight end Brock Bowers and wide receivers Tre Tucker and Jakobi Meyers, who could complement Winston’s skill set if he were to see the field. However, his history of turnovers remains a concern.

Spytek’s hiring marks a new chapter for the Raiders, who are looking to rebuild under his leadership. The team’s ability to address its quarterback situation will be critical to its success in the coming seasons.
