Raiders Release Cornerback to Clear Cap Space Ahead of Draft

HENDERSON, Nev. – The Las Vegas Raiders waived cornerback Jalen Jones on Monday, following unsuccessful attempts to trade him. The decision clears $3.4 million in salary cap space for the team, which is gearing up for the upcoming NFL Draft.
Jones, 26, had a mixed tenure with the Raiders, appearing in 24 games since being claimed off waivers in 2023 after a brief stint with the New Orleans Saints. Over the past season, he recorded a career-high 69 tackles, 16 passes defended, and three interceptions, starting all 16 games. However, he also faced challenges, allowing 698 yards and nine touchdowns, leading to a passer rating of 108.9 when targeted.
The departure of Jones follows the recent signing of cornerback Marcus Peters, further reshaping the Raiders’ secondary. General Manager John Spytek noted the importance of depth at the cornerback position, especially in the nickel role, which he described as critical to the team’s defensive strategy. “We stress the importance of that position in our defense,” Spytek said at the annual league meeting. “They’re asked to do a lot, and they can be hard to find.”
Currently, the Raiders’ cornerback roster includes players like Amik Robertson, their 2024 fourth-round pick, and returning players who need to step up after the loss of experienced talent. With the NFL Draft approaching, the Raiders are expected to prioritize cornerback depth, potentially targeting Michigan’s cornerback DJ Turner in the first round. Other prospects such as Kentucky’s Kair Elam and Ole Miss’s Deane Leonard may also be considered in later rounds.
Jones’ release is part of the Raiders’ effort to create flexibility within their roster ahead of the draft, aiming to bolster their defense through new acquisitions and promising talent.
