Eric Stokes Nfl Cornerback Free Agency

Las Vegas, NV — The Las Vegas Raiders have signed former Green Bay Packers cornerback Eric Stokes to a one-year, $4 million contract as the NFL’s free agency period kicks off. The move comes as the Raiders look to bolster their secondary after a quiet start to the offseason.

Stokes, a 2021 first-round draft pick, dealt with significant injuries during his tenure in Green Bay, limiting his impact on the field. After a promising rookie season where he contributed 14 starts, Stokes only played in 12 games across the 2022 and 2023 seasons due to injury woes.

Back healthy in 2024, Stokes struggled, ranking last among Packers’ cornerbacks in yards allowed per coverage snap, according to NFL Pro. Even with Jaire Alexander sidelined, he could not maintain a starting position, as he was surpassed by other players, including Keisean Nixon and Carrington Valentine.

“This new opportunity with the Raiders is a chance for a fresh start,” said Stokes, optimistic about leaving his injury struggles behind. “I have been working hard this offseason to get back to my rookie form.”

Despite his challenges, Stokes played every game in the 2024 season, demonstrating resilience and determination to overcome previous setbacks. Team officials believe his work with trainers at UW-Madison to address soft-tissue injuries suggests his health issues may now be a thing of the past.

The Raiders, who are known for their frugal approach in recent signings, are hopeful that Stokes can recapture the talent he displayed when he first entered the league. He had a stretch late last season where he allowed minimal receptions, posting just six catches for 22 yards during a four-game period.

However, Stokes has yet to make a mark on special teams, participating in only 23 special teams snaps compared to 698 defensive plays over the last two seasons. As is common for reserve cornerbacks, his ability to contribute on special teams could influence his chances of making the Raiders’ 53-man roster in 2025.

In total, Stokes has appeared in 45 games, starting in 32, but has notably not recorded an interception or pass deflection in his last three seasons. The Packers opted to decline his fifth-year option in 2024, making him a free agent.

The Raiders’ decision to sign Stokes signals their intent to enhance their defensive lineup, even as they remain cautious in their approach to free agency. Stokes’ performance will be closely monitored as the offseason progresses and training camps commence.
