Las Vegas, NV — The Las Vegas Raiders bolstered their defensive lineup on Monday by re-signing defensive end Malcolm Koonce to a one-year, $12 million contract. This move comes after Koonce missed the entire 2024 season due to a knee injury, yet the Raiders remain confident in his potential as a key player moving forward.

Koonce, a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, previously showcased his skills during the 2023 season, appearing in all 17 games and recording impressive statistics: 43 tackles, eight sacks, and three forced fumbles. His ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks makes him an integral part of the Raiders’ defensive strategy.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Koonce’s performance after a year off, his youth at 26 years old and previous contributions have led the Raiders to invest in his future. “We’re excited to have Malcolm back; he’s an important piece of our defensive puzzle,” Raiders General Manager stated. “If he returns to form, he can significantly impact our pass rush, which is crucial in the AFC West against talented quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Justin Herbert.”

The re-signing of Koonce follows a busy offseason for the Raiders, which included a coaching change and the acquisition of quarterback Geno Smith through a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. These moves reflect the team’s intent to strengthen its roster and compete in the upcoming season.

In addition to Koonce, the Raiders also signed safety Jeremy Chinn and re-signed defensive tackle Adam Butler on the same day. However, the team has seen the departures of cornerback Nate Hobbs, safety Tre’von Moehrig, and linebacker Robert Spillane to other clubs.

As the Raiders prepare for the 2025 season, the focus remains on building a strong defensive unit that can contend with the high-powered offenses in their division. Koonce’s recovery and return to form will be a storyline to watch as the season approaches.
