CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Quail Hollow Championship is underway, and course conditions are presenting unique challenges for players. After five inches of rain early in the week, the par-72 course feels significantly longer than its listed 7,600 yards, likely playing closer to 8,200 yards due to poor roll-out on the wet ground.

Top players like Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy are accustomed to the challenge, but golfers with lower ball speeds are faced with difficult decisions regarding their club selections. Many have opted to adjust their bags, emphasizing the importance of peak height and carry distance to compensate for the softer ground conditions.

According to Johnny Wunder, an equipment expert covering the event, 25 mini-drivers are in play this week, including models from Titleist and TaylorMade. These clubs offer advantages for players aiming for long drives while maintaining control over their shots, especially on tight holes with challenging doglegs.

A key theme among players and their caddies is the effectiveness of 7-woods in these conditions, with a staggering 61 of these clubs reported in play. The ability of these clubs to achieve peak height and spin allows players to effectively reach greens even on difficult approaches.

Xander Schauffele, the defending champion, and his caddie are taking a close look at wedge options this week, highlighting the importance of bounce and turf interaction when approaching shots from soft lies. Speed off the face also remains a critical factor due to the fast greens that contradict the softer fairways.

Wunder also emphasizes that Bettinardi, known for crafting high-quality putters, has made a significant impact in both putters and other clubs. Their production process, which takes place entirely in Tinley Park, Illinois, allows for rapid innovation and tight quality control, contributing to the refined performance seen by players on the course.

As the tournament continues, players must navigate not just the wet conditions but also the evolving challenges that Quail Hollow presents, making strategic gear choices essential for a successful week.
