Rain Clears as Kentucky Derby Set to Begin at Churchill Downs

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The rain subsided just ahead of the 151st Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, where excitement fills the air despite gray skies and a chilly breeze. With less than two hours to post time, controversy and anticipation grow as $600,000 is on the line in the Twin Spires Turf Sprint.
Hosts Craig Melvin, Al Roker, and Dylan Dreyer celebrated the iconic race with the introduction of two cocktails, a Woodford Reserve Bourbon Mint Julep and a Woodford Reserve Spire, for viewers to enjoy from home. The atmosphere is electric as fans arrive, despite the threat of rain lingering in the forecast.
The Kentucky Derby, often called “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” is becoming a focal point for sports betting this year. Journalism, the horse favored to win, has drifted to 4-1 odds from an initial 3-1 as the day progresses, signaling a shift in betting preferences due to challenging track conditions.
“I’ve often been accused of being a disgruntled sportswriter, so journalism is something that I value very much,” co-owner Aron Wellman shared about the history behind the horse’s name. “I appreciate responsible and diligent journalists.”
At age 89, legendary trainer D. Wayne Lukas remains passionate about competition, expressing his enduring love for the sport. Meanwhile, Derby first-timer, singer Potter, prepared to perform the national anthem amid the lingering drizzle, saying, “I totally get it,” in reference to the excitement of being at the Derby.
Among the crowd are Derby veterans Carrie and Jeff Ketterman, who have attended numerous races. “There’s nothing like the magic of the first Saturday in May!” Carrie said. The Kettermans are anticipating the fashion and festivities that make the event special.
For many, the Kentucky Derby signifies not just race day but a cultural event steeped in tradition. From the elegant hats to gourmet food options, attendees relish every aspect of the occasion, as even heavy rains earlier couldn’t dampen their spirits.
“I just love all of it! The food, the fashion. It’s so much fun, even in this weather,” exclaimed first-time Derby-goer Tarra Puckett.
The stage is set, and in just moments, the trumpets will call the horses to the starting gates. The 151st Kentucky Derby promises to deliver thrills as always.
