Rain Delays and Drama Mark Italian Open’s Fourth Round Matches

Rome, Italy – The Internazionali BNL d’Italia faced delays and excitement during its fourth-round matches on May 13, 2025. Casper Ruud‘s match against Jaume Munar was postponed to Wednesday due to rain disrupting the schedule.
The rain forced players and fans to take cover as Ruud and Munar waited to take the court. The match is now scheduled to begin no earlier than 2 p.m. local time, following a series of other matches, including quarter-finals.
Ruud, currently fresh off his first ATP Masters 1000 title in Madrid, leads his head-to-head series against Munar 4-1. The winner of their upcoming match will face Jannik Sinner, who triumphed over Francisco Cerundolo 7-6(2), 6-3.
Meanwhile, Lorenzo Musetti, the eighth seed, had a remarkable day as he defeated Daniil Medvedev after a lengthy rain delay. Musetti was ahead with a score of 7-5, 5-4, when play was halted for nearly three hours due to rain. After the delay, he quickly sealed his victory with a forehand winner, posting a score of 7-5, 6-4.
Musetti’s win marks his entry into a Masters 1000 quarter-final and he has shown impressive form, having claimed 21 out of his last 25 clay court matches. He will now face an opponent yet to be determined.
In another match impacted by rain, Hubert Hurkacz secured his spot in the quarter-finals with a hard-fought victory over Czech player Jakub Mensik. Hurkacz triumphed 7-6(5), 4-6, 7-6(5) after three hours of play. He fired 16 aces and saved all three break points faced, improving his head-to-head record against Mensik to 2-0.
American Tommy Paul also advanced by defeating Australian Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-3. This victory marked Paul’s first Top 10 win this season and he is the first American man to reach back-to-back quarter-finals in Rome since 1993-94.
As the tournament continues, players and fans alike await the outcome of the scheduled matches, hoping for an exciting finish to this year’s Italian Open.
