Cyril Ramaphosa Video Message Cricket Team

NAVI MUMBAI, India — South African President Cyril Ramaphosa sparked debate on Saturday after he appeared in a video message wearing a national football jersey while addressing the women’s cricket team ahead of their first-ever ODI World Cup final against India.

The video, released as a motivational message, quickly went viral due to Ramaphosa’s choice of attire. Many on social media questioned how a prominent leader could make such an error, donning a football jersey instead of cricket gear.

Despite the wardrobe mishap, Ramaphosa delivered a message filled with pride and encouragement for the team led by Laura Wolvaardt. Speaking to the players, he urged them to “slay the giants” and bring home the cup, referencing the support of South Africa’s 62 million citizens.

“There will be almost 40,000 Indians who support cricket, and you know how cricket mad they are. But they should not even begin to discourage you,” he said. “You have 62 million behind you. Much as they have 1.3 billion, you have 62 million. When you are small, you can take on giants. So go out tomorrow and slay the giants,” he added.

Throughout the video, the President humorously tugged at his football shirt, drawing attention to his outfit choice as South Africans began to buy it, which led to widespread laughter and discussion online.

As the Proteas prepare for the final at the DY Patil Stadium, they face an India team seeking its first title after finishing as runners-up in previous tournaments. India, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, has built momentum after a dramatic victory over Australia in the semi-finals, while South Africa defeated England Women to reach their historic final.
