In a remarkable moment for Indian shooting, Ramita Jindal has booked her place in the finals of the women’s 10m air rifle event at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She becomes only the second Indian female shooter in two decades to make it to the medal round, following in the footsteps of Manu Bhaker.

Ramita shot a total of 631.5 and secured her spot in the final in fifth place, pulling through strongly in the final series. Unfortunately, her teammate, Elavenil Valarivan, who had been showing promise earlier in the competition, finished in 10th place and missed out on the final.

The competition was fierce, and Korea‘s Hyojin Ban set a new Olympic Qualification record with a score of 634.5, surpassing the previous record. Ramita initially struggled but started strong in the later series, making her way up the rankings.

She began by shooting impressive scores of 10.5 and 10.9, placing her in a good position early on. Meanwhile, Valarivan had a shaky start but climbed up to third position by her third shot. However, both shooters faced ups and downs throughout the series.

Despite a challenging third series, where neither shooter performed at their best, Ramita bounced back to finish the fourth series strong. Elavenil, who had shown potential with consistent scores, faced pressure and ultimately fell out of contention during the final rounds.

With Ramita’s impressive performance, she became the first Indian female rifle shooter to reach the Olympic final since her coach, Suma Shirur, achieved this feat in Athens back in 2004. As she prepares for the final, her journey has already made history.
