Rams Re-sign Jimmy Garoppolo to One-Year Deal as Backup Quarterback

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Los Angeles Rams have confirmed the signing of backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to a one-year contract worth $4,505,000, plus $9 million in incentives, as of March 10, 2025. Garoppolo, 33, is set to return for a second season backing up starter Matthew Stafford.
The Rams announced the agreement shortly after the legal tampering period opened on Monday. Head Coach Sean McVay and General Manager Les Snead had expressed a desire to retain Garoppolo but also indicated they would evaluate other market opportunities. However, within an hour of the period opening, Garoppolo opted to stay in Los Angeles.
During his first season with the Rams in 2024, Garoppolo was called upon after Stafford was rested in the regular-season finale. In that game, he impressed by completing 27 of 41 passes for 334 yards, throwing two touchdowns and one interception, showcasing his capability as a reliable backup.
“We would love to bring him back,” McVay stated last week, signaling the team’s interest in securing Garoppolo’s services. “That’s the hope and anticipation.”
Garoppolo’s career stats demonstrate his experience and effectiveness as a quarterback. Over 82 games in 11 seasons, he has completed 67.4% of his passes, accumulating 15,828 yards, 96 touchdowns, and 52 interceptions. He originally entered the league with the New England Patriots in 2014, where he served as a backup to Tom Brady for three seasons.
In 2017, Garoppolo was traded to the San Francisco 49ers, where he started for six seasons, achieving a completion rate of 67.6% and contributing 13,599 yards, 82 touchdowns, and 42 interceptions to his resume. Following a lone season with the Las Vegas Raiders, he joined the Rams as Stafford’s backup.
Garoppolo holds a playoff record of 5-2, including leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl after the 2020 season and the NFC Championship game in 2022.
This signing comes as the Rams prepare for the upcoming 2025 season, which also includes improvements to the roster, such as signing free-agent wide receiver Davante Adams to enhance the offensive strategy centered around Stafford.
As the Rams look ahead, discussions about strengthening their quarterback depth continue, particularly with the potential of Garoppolo becoming a starter if Stafford is unavailable. The overall strategy reflects the team’s commitment to maintaining a competitive edge while ensuring they are prepared for any unforeseen circumstances during the season.
