LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams signed wide receiver and punt returner Britain Covey to a one-year deal on Monday. Covey, 28, joins the Rams after three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, who originally signed him as an undrafted free agent.

Covey played primarily as a punt returner with the Eagles, returning 68 punts for 771 yards during his career. His standout season came in 2023 when he led the NFL with 417 punt return yards. Despite battling injuries, including a shoulder and neck issue that limited him to just five games last season, Covey’s previous performance in the 2023 season highlights his capabilities.

In addition to his punt returning, Covey also tallied 11 kickoffs for 236 yards in his time with Philadelphia. During his rookie season, he made an impact by returning two punts in the Super Bowl.

The Rams are looking to strengthen their roster after adding six players in the draft and 17 undrafted free agents this offseason. Covey will likely compete for the returner role, a position previously held by Xavier Smith and Jordan Whittington.

Covey had a successful college career at the University of Utah, where he was known for his kick returning skills, including a notable 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the Rose Bowl against Ohio State. The Rams are eager to see how his talents can enhance their special teams in the upcoming season.
