How Randi Mahomes Saved Patrick from Quitting Football in High School

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — In a recent Instagram Q&A, Randi Mahomes revealed that her son, Patrick, once contemplated quitting football during his high school years at Whitehouse High School in East Texas. The revelation highlights a pivotal moment that could have reshaped NFL history.
Randi Mahomes explained that while her son was driven and determined, he faced challenging moments when doubt crept in. “There were times when he would get a little down, even a moment in high school when he wanted to quit football. Yes, he did,” she said. She encouraged him to persevere, reminding him that sitting out a season would not be enjoyable.
Fortunately, Patrick heeded his mother’s advice and continued to play. During his senior year, he had a remarkable season, passing for 4,619 yards and 50 touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 948 yards and 15 touchdowns. This impressive performance earned him the MaxPreps Male Athlete of the Year award.
Mahomes’ athletic prowess extended beyond football; he also excelled in basketball and baseball. His talents in baseball led to a draft selection by the Detroit Tigers in 2014. However, he ultimately chose to pursue a career in football and committed to Texas Tech University.
At Texas Tech, Mahomes continued to shine, leading all of college football in passing yards and total touchdowns during his junior year, which resulted in him receiving the Sammy Baugh Trophy. This performance caught the attention of NFL scouts, particularly Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who executed a trade-up in the 2017 NFL Draft to select Mahomes with the 10th overall pick.
Since joining the NFL, Mahomes transformed the Chiefs into a formidable team, winning two MVP awards and two Super Bowls. His trajectory from a young athlete on the brink of quitting to a household name in professional football is a testament to determination and support from his family.
Randi’s intervention during those uncertain high school years proves critical in shaping not just Patrick’s career, but potentially, an era in the NFL. As Mahomes continues to push the boundaries of success, fans can only imagine how history might have changed had he decided to quit football.
