Rangers and Blackhawks Discuss Major Trade as Offseason Begins

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs in the 2024-2025 season, prompting both teams to consider significant changes. A recent report from Rangers Insider Arthur Staple of The Athletic suggests a potential blockbuster trade involving Rangers star forward Mika Zibanejad.
Staple outlined a proposed deal where the Rangers would trade Zibanejad, retaining 20% of his contract, along with a second-round pick to the Blackhawks. In return, the Rangers would receive future considerations. This move would free up cap space, as Zibanejad’s average annual value (AAV) is $8.5 million and he is one of the highest-paid players on the team.
Despite being a long-time productive center, Zibanejad struggled last season, finishing with 62 points (20 goals, 42 assists) over 82 games. The Rangers recently acquired a new center who could step into the top-six, potentially making Zibanejad expendable in trade discussions.
Details on what the Rangers would receive remain unclear, as the organization looks to regroup after winning the President’s Trophy the previous year but falling short of the playoffs.
General Manager Chris Drury faces challenging decisions during this offseason, including how to address Zibanejad’s future with the team. The full no-movement clause in Zibanejad’s contract adds complexity to any potential trade.
