Rangers Extend Chris Drury’s Contract as President and GM

NEW YORK, NY — The New York Rangers announced today that President and General Manager Chris Drury has signed a multi-year contract extension. This decision comes as the team reflects on a disappointing season that ended without a playoff appearance.
James L. Dolan, Executive Chairman and CEO of MSG Sports, expressed his confidence in Drury’s leadership. “Over his tenure, Chris has shown passion for the Rangers, relentless work ethic, and a tireless pursuit of excellence,” Dolan stated. “While we are all disappointed in what transpired last season, I am confident in his ability to guide this organization to success.”
Drury, who took over as the Rangers’ President and GM on May 5, 2021, leads the team following a recovery period. During his tenure, the Rangers posted a record of 193-105-30 and made their way to the Stanley Cup Playoffs three times, achieving a historic number of wins for the franchise.
“I am honored to sign this contract extension and continue in this position with the team I grew up supporting,” Drury said. He emphasized his commitment to the team, looking forward to improving the roster over the offseason.
In the 2023-24 season, Drury oversaw a team that won the Presidents’ Trophy, marking a franchise record with 55 victories and 114 points. However, the team’s recent failure to qualify for the playoffs has prompted introspection.
The Rangers have faced challenges with coaching stability, as both of Drury’s past hires, Gerard Gallant and Peter Laviolette, experienced early success followed by disappointment in their second seasons. Drury is currently conducting a search for a new head coach.
Despite the team’s struggles, Dolan’s extension of Drury signals a commitment to continuity and further development of the Rangers into a competitive team. As Drury heads into his fifth year, he will work to address team structure and player performance issues this offseason.
Chris Drury’s professional journey includes significant achievements both as a player and an executive. He captured a Stanley Cup in 2001 and served as captain of the Rangers. His extensive background includes international experience, having managed the U.S. Men’s National Team in multiple championships.
The next few months will be critical as Drury aims to rebuild the Rangers into a postseason contender.
