Rangers, Penguins Clash for Crucial Playoff Positioning

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins are set for a pivotal matchup on Sunday at PPG Paints Arena, with significant implications for the Eastern Conference playoff race. The game begins at 3:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcasted on MAX, truTV, TNT, SN, and TVAS. The Rangers (27-25-4) are currently four points away from a wild-card spot following a recent 8-2 defeat to the Buffalo Sabres, while the Penguins (23-26-9) sit seven points out of contention.
With the Detroit Red Wings and Ottawa Senators holding the wild card positions with 62 points each, both teams are eager to improve their standings as the postseason approaches. The Rangers have reached the playoffs in four of the last five seasons, whereas the Penguins are facing the possibility of missing out for a third consecutive year.
In a discussion between NHL.com’s senior draft writer Mike Morreale and staff writer Tracey Myers, the focus turned to which team has a better chance of making the playoffs. Myers remarked, “The East is just a big jumble of teams trying to get to the playoffs. I think the Rangers have a better chance of getting in than the Penguins.” Myers noted the Rangers’ goaltending and recent performance, stating, “I like their penalty kill, tied for fifth in the NHL at 81.9 percent, and their production is solid as well.”
Conversely, Morreale emphasized the historical significance of the Penguins’ recent struggles, saying, “Am I the only one finding it hard to believe the Penguins will not make the playoffs for a third straight season?” He highlighted the potential impact of captain Sidney Crosby and his experience in crucial games, having scored 59 points in 56 games this season.
As the conversation continued, Myers acknowledged Pittsburgh’s past success but maintained that the Rangers appeared steadier heading into the final stretch. “I just think they’re the steadier ship as we enter the turbulent waters of playoff positioning,” she added.
Morreale pointed out the Penguins’ recent resurgence, citing their improved goal prevention, ranking third in goals-against average (1.75) since February 1. Crosby leads the roster with 59 points, while Richard Rakell tops the team with 25 goals this season.
With playoff hopes on the line, fans from both teams are expected to fill the arena, eager for a fiercely contested matchup that could tip the balance in the competitive Eastern Conference.
