Texas Rangers Patrick Corbin Signing Announcement

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers announced Tuesday that they have signed left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin to a one-year Major League contract. The deal comes as the team grapples with injuries in their rotation, particularly after Jon Gray suffered a wrist fracture during Cactus League play.

Corbin’s contract details have not been fully released, but reports suggest that it includes a guarantee of slightly over $1 million, in addition to performance incentives potentially worth another million. The move to sign Corbin comes as the Rangers look to bolster their pitching staff while addressing the loss of Gray, who has been placed on the 60-day injured list due to his injury.

The 12-year veteran has had a challenging past few seasons. After a successful start with the Washington Nationals in 2019, where he helped secure the team’s first World Series title, Corbin’s performance has notably declined. He held a career record of 103-131 with a 4.51 ERA, leading the National League in losses from 2021 to 2023.

Corbin’s statistics reveal a sharp decline in both his strikeout and earned run average (ERA). His ERA climbed to 4.66 in 2020, and over the last four seasons, he has managed a 5.71 ERA with a strikeout rate of only 17.7%. Despite these struggles, Rangers management highlighted Corbin’s durability, underscoring his consistent ability to take the mound — he has made at least 31 starts in each of the last four seasons.

“We need reliable arms in our rotation, especially with injuries plaguing our team right now. Patrick brings plenty of experience, and we believe he can still contribute positively,” said a source within the Rangers organization.

Corbin was initially drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, where he was a two-time All-Star before signing a hefty $140 million contract with the Nationals prior to the 2019 season. He finished that season strong, not only in regular play but also during the postseason, helping to propel the Nationals to the World Series.

Now, as Corbin transitions to his new role with the Rangers, the team must look forward to the regular season, with their Opening Day matchup against the Boston Red Sox scheduled for March 27. The Rangers, who finished third in the American League West last year, are seeking to make strides toward a better performance this season following their 2023 World Series victory.

As Corbin joins the Rangers, fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if he can recapture some of the effectiveness that once made him a top-tier pitcher in the league.
