Barcelona, Spain – Raphinha has voiced his frustration over his limited playing time while under coach Xavi Hernández at FC Barcelona, stating he felt a lack of confidence from the coaching staff.

The 28-year-old winger, who is now a contender for the Ballon d'Or, transferred to Barcelona from Leeds United in 2022 but often found himself on the bench or substituted early in matches.

“I felt like the coaching staff didn’t have any confidence in me,” Raphinha said in a recent interview. He recalled games where he performed well yet was replaced without the coaching staff considering his contributions.

“There’s a famous video of me exploding when I reach the bench and punch it,” he added, referring to a substitution during a crucial Europa League game in 2023 where he believed he was playing well.

During his two seasons with Xavi, Raphinha appeared in 87 matches, with only eight times completing the full 90 minutes. Despite his contributions, he often saw other players selected over him.

After attempts to communicate with Xavi, Raphinha realized that the coach’s decisions were unlikely to change. “I had several conversations, but I saw that it was making no difference,” he said.

Since Xavi’s departure, Raphinha has blossomed under new coach Hansi Flick, scoring 31 goals this season alone and contributing significantly to the team’s success.

“He [Flick] looks out for all players, whether they play or not,” Raphinha praised, noting Flick’s concern for other team members after the departure of Vitor Roque.

As Barcelona continues to compete for a treble this year, Raphinha’s resurgence has been a key factor, showcasing what he can achieve when given the opportunity.
