TAMPA, Fla. – South Carolina guard Raven Johnson‘s journey through college basketball is marked by resilience, family support, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. As her team heads into the national semifinals, Johnson’s story reflects both her achievements and the sacrifices made by her family.

During the recent Senior Day at Colonial Life Arena, the crowd erupted into chants of “One more year!” in support of Johnson, a two-time national champion and a crucial component of one of the most successful classes in Gamecocks history. Now in her third active season and second as a starter, her future remains uncertain as she weighs whether to return for an additional year of eligibility after previously tearing her ACL.

“I owe my success to my mom,” Johnson said. Her mother, Shekia Johnson, has been a steadfast supporter throughout her career, providing encouragement and transportation to practices and games from Atlanta to Columbia. “She does so much for me, I owe her a car,” Johnson remarked, referring to a recent gift she bestowed upon her mother—a brand-new Nissan, symbolizing her deep appreciation for years of support.

As she navigates the pressures of being a high-profile athlete, Johnson has also faced scrutiny. After a challenging game against Iowa last season, she deleted her social media accounts amid criticism. “Honestly, you don’t think Caitlin is under pressure?” Shekia told her daughter. This perspective helped Johnson regain her confidence during tough times.

Johnson’s basketball journey was ignited at the age of five by her grandfather, Rodrick Boone, a retired U.S. military officer. Boone helped introduce Johnson and her twin brother Richard to the game, fostering their love for basketball. “Playing with my twin pushed me to excel in the sport,” Johnson recalled, as she shifted from youth basketball to competing at a high level in sixth grade.

This season, Johnson has averaged 4.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game, contributing to South Carolina’s success in reaching the NCAA tournament. She has helped the team achieve a remarkable 106-4 overall record since her arrival. “Her ability to pass is incredible. She is our floor general,” said senior guard Jada Williams in praise of her teammate.

As the Gamecocks prepare for their fourth semifinal game against Texas, Johnson’s journey comes full circle. The opportunity to win a third national title would place her in an elite group within college basketball. “I didn’t expect this much success, but it’s truly a blessing,” Johnson said as she reflected on her achievements.

Preparing for this key matchup, Johnson noted, “We haven’t played our best basketball yet in the tournament. Hopefully, we can show that in the next game.” Her mindset exemplifies her determination to push the Gamecocks to greater heights.

Johnson’s evolution as an athlete and leader marks her as a pivotal figure in South Carolina’s program. With family, friends, and supporters cheering her on, Johnson represents a legacy built on perseverance and love.
