Baltimore Ravens Kicker Justin Tucker

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Baltimore Ravens are gearing up for the NFL Draft on April 27, facing crucial decisions regarding their roster and particularly their kicking situation. Senior special teams coach Randy Brown has traveled extensively across the country to evaluate potential draft-eligible kickers, a process Ravens coach John Harbaugh deems essential.

After 13 seasons with Justin Tucker as their reliable kicker, the Ravens may explore alternatives. Tucker, who is 36 years old, is under investigation by the NFL following allegations of inappropriate behavior, prompting the Ravens to reassess their long-term plans at the position.

“You have to look. You always have to do your due diligence,” Harbaugh said. “We will be prepared to do that on draft day if we feel like we need to and if the right guy is there.”

Despite Tucker’s career struggles last season, general manager Eric DeCosta noted that the Ravens have had success with undrafted kickers in the past, as they did with Tucker in 2012. However, the trend has been to draft kickers in recent years, with at least one selected every year since 2012, except for 2015.

Among the kickers evaluated is Florida State’s Ryan Fitzgerald, who boasts an impressive college career. Fitzgerald was the only player to deliver a flawless performance at a recent specialist workout, which drew attention from Ravens scouts.

Evaluating kickers is unique compared to other positions, as it requires specific skill sets. Former NFL kicker and current coach John Carney explained that while kickers must exhibit strength and speed, they also need mental toughness and focus. “The difference between college kickers who make it in the NFL and those who don’t comes down to the ‘six inches between their ears,’” said Carney.

Furthermore, the Ravens must contemplate their draft strategy. They hold 11 picks, with their first-round selection at No. 27. Their priorities include reinforcing their pass rush and filling gaps on defense following key losses in free agency.

As they prepare for the draft, the Ravens face the complex decision of replacing Tucker while simultaneously building a more competitive team for the upcoming season. “We’re always looking to find the right fit, but experience is invaluable,” said DeCosta.
