Champions League Real Madrid Arsenal Match Preview

LONDON, England — As Real Madrid prepares to face Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal tonight at the Emirates Stadium, concerns loom over suspended players due to accumulated yellow cards. The stakes are high with both clubs harboring key players at risk of missing the return leg at Santiago Bernabéu next Wednesday.

Real Madrid, under manager Carlo Ancelotti, enters the match with six players — names undisclosed — one yellow card away from suspension, while the Gunners have three key starters, including Timber, who could also face the same fate. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta‘s squad concerns are further complicated by injuries to other first-team players.

Madrid is considered the favorite despite an inconsistent run and player injuries. Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who missed three matches due to a muscular injury, is set to return but may not be fully fit. His absence previously saw Madrid concede eight goals at home during that stretch.

“Having Courtois back gives us a better chance,” Ancelotti said during a press conference. “We need every available player against a tough opponent like Arsenal.”

Defensive uncertainties plague both teams. For Real Madrid, the suspension of key player remains pivotal, affecting his tactics. With this in mind, Ancelotti has opted for Valverde as a makeshift left-back, while Alaba will fill in an essential role on the right. Rüdiger will start despite physical concerns, supported by a midfield led by Luka Modric and Camavinga.

Meanwhile, Arsenal confronts a troubling injury crisis. Arteta is without pivotal players, including Gabriel, for the remainder of the season. The absence forces him to consider his options carefully as he prepares to face a side experienced in knockout stages. If selected, Jurrie Timber is likely to take Gabriel’s position alongside Saliba in central defense.

“We have a game plan, but injuries make adjustments necessary,” Arteta commented. “We will do our best to field the strongest team possible.”

The two clubs have a storied history in Europe, and both are eager to advance, particularly Arsenal, who are seeking their first semifinal appearance in 16 years.

Tonight’s fixture is set to kick off at 3 p.m. ET. The match will be officiated by Irfan Peljto at one of football’s most iconic venues — the Emirates Stadium.
